6 Things to Consider When Planning for Your First SMP Procedure

If you’re thinking of getting scalp micropigmentation done, chances are you’ve already done some fair bit of research. There are a lot of things to consider before you put your head in the hands of an SMP artist. Here are 6 important points to keep in mind when planning for your first SMP procedure.

Select an SMP clinic with a superb portfolio
Credentials matter when it comes to something as scalp micropigmentation. The results are glaringly obvious and cannot be hidden away if done badly. Many tattoo artists claim to be micropigmentation specialists, but they really will just tattoo your head. Ensure you see the clinic’s as well as the artist’s credentials, the number of procedures they’ve done, online reviews, etc.

If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is
Often you may come across pictures that show an extreme hair transformation. Check the before and after pictures of the clinic’s clients. If you do not see any redness in the ‘after’ photo or if it looks way too neat (almost photoshopped), then turn on your alarm. The best way to assess the clinic’s competence is to see some photos of the client at different instances after their treatment. This will help you also see how the clinic follows-up with its clients.

You may have to shave your head
This is purely based on the kind of procedure you’ve chosen. Head shaving is most common with scalp micropigmentation. If you simply want to add density to your hair and make it look thicker, or if you want to cover just the bald spots on your head, then you don’t have to get rid of your locks. The artist will part your hair and fill in the gaps. Only in cases where you want an even-looking hairline or have extreme hair loss, then shaving might be necessary.

Pain is relative
SMP is a relatively painless procedure. It does take about 3–5 hours to complete though. Most patients usually feel little to no pain during the entire procedure. However, pain is relative. If you have a high tolerance for needles, then you’ll not feel anything. If your skin is too sensitive, then you may feel some mild discomfort and pricking during the procedure. But, the entire process itself is painless. You’ll only feel some redness afterwards, which will subside in a day or two.

It will not help you grow back hair
Scalp micropigmentation is a camouflage for the missing hair spots on your head. It is a mere cosmetic procedure to mask the baldness and give your head a more natural and fuller look. Your hair will not magically grow back if you opt for SMP. Your lost hair follicles will not regenerate. SMP only serves to make you “look” good and help gain your self-confidence back.

SMP is permanent
Scalp micropigmentation is a permanent procedure. You cannot erase the pigment marks off your scalp if you don’t like it after some time. The pigment will fade over time, but will never disappear. If you don’t want anything permanent, then micropigmentation is not for you.

These cautionary points will help you make an informed decision about scalp micropigmentation, the clinic, and the pigmentation specialist.
